Author Interview Simran Chandak

1)Can you tell us a little about your book ?

This book is a compilation of my poems. I wrote majority of these during lockdown. While we
were sitting in our homes, witnessing what the pandemic bought us, all of us had different
questions in our heads. When is this going to end? When will things go back to normal? When
will I be able to go out again?
We all sought different forms of jobs to avoid dealing with the anxiety and stress these
questions gave us. I chose words and art as a medium and hence here I am today.

2)Is there a specific event that inspired this story or was this an out of the blue idea ?

I actually had written two poems before the pandemic began. I’ll tell you how I got to write the
first one. I don’t remember the exact activity i was doing when I first felt the urge to note
something down. I took a pen and paper and wrote the two sentences down. Coincidentally the
ending words of the two sentence rhymed. And woah what? Could I write poems now?

3)What got you writing in the first place ?

Generally people say, there emotions get them writing. Love, hate, rejection, motivation etc.
Mine was a little different. It was actually a challenge.
So basically, one day my family and I sat to play cards after dinner, which is a daily ritual. We
were discussing birthday cards when suddenly papa said to me that he once wrote a poem for
my mother in a card. An indian dad and a poem? How could I believe? As I turned towards my
mother for the much needed confirmation, she already fetched the card papa gave her, from the
drawer. All her cards are kept safe aside in the shelves but not this one. This one was in the
drawer. My dad was surprised seeing the card kept so close but more was I. The poem was
amazing. It was pure. and then papa turned towards me and goes, “I don’t think you can write a
poem.”
And that was it. With a sheer dedication, a pen and a paper, i sat down to write a poem for his
birthday which turned out to be beautiful. Since then I never stopped.

4)What was your impression of your first draft when you read it?

I loved it haha

5)Which part of your story connects the most with you? Why?

The love and the feelings section connect the most with me. These are somethings I
genuinely feel everyday.

6)What makes your book the one to read ?

To most of my readers, this book is going to be extremely relatable. Since most of them are
based on different day to day mood shifts, its gonna connect to my readers assuring how we all
go through the same things. Not only that, but how these phases are only temporary, but when
they go, they leave a beautiful impression.
There are a few poems that I dont like anymore. But when i recall the happiness i wrote them
whith, everything starts making sense.

7) What was the best advice you got while writing?

At first, no one knew I wrote poems. But one day I showed it to my very close friend and she
goes like, “Dude, you write beautifully. Don't ever stop please.”
It still makes me smile and keeps me going.

8)Who’s your all time favorite author? Which book of his/hers made you fall in love with them?

Anna todd with the ‘After series’ made me fall in love with reading. For years I had ignored
reading and forgetting how could it could make me feel. A little credit here goes to Suhani as
well. She used to blabber about novels and I was more or less forced to listen to her until i
realised, that the plot, the story, the ending, the small poems— everything intrigued me.

9)What is your evergreen tip to the writers out there ?

Believe in yourself, believe in what you write and take your time. It’s your writing, they’re your
words. Don’t compare or question it. It’s bound to be unique since you wrote them.

10)Do you have another plot brewing?

Yes, I am currently working on a teen novel and I am very excited for it to finish.
